January 23rd, 2020 – Separate but Very Together

If there was a soundtrack to my life, this band would write most of the songs to it. I had the very good fortune to see them in their heyday, when they charted with single after single after single and I clearly wasn’t the only one buying their albums.

I spent good money for tickets to three concerts spanning over three albums in five years from 1981 to 1986. I think I still own a t-shirt from those days. I own a number of concert tees from those days but that’s another story.

Journey – “Separate Ways (World’s Apart)”

Journey really was one of the all-time favorite bands of my youth and I amassed probably half of their 17 combined studio and live albums which probably contained the bulk of the 59 singles they released since 1975.

Talk about radio friendly, arena rock, anthemic tunes – they covered just about the entirety of my elementary, middle and high school years. Journey formed in San Francisco in 1973 by members Neal Schon and Ross Valory who splintered off from another popular 70’s group, Santana. Again a progressive beginning for Journey took a mainstream turn with the addition of lead vocalist Steve Perry for album #4 “Infinity” in 1978 and the rest, as they say, is history.

I chose “Separate Ways” for my playlist frankly because I got burned out on the standards “Don’t Stop Believin’“, “Anyway you Want it” and “Faithfully” but I really wanted the band represented somewhere in the music I listened to on whatever journey I was taking.

Here we stand
Worlds apart
Hearts broken in two, two, two
Sleepless nights
Losing ground
I’m reaching for you, you, you

Feelin’ that it’s gone
Can change your mind
If we can’t go on
Survive the tide, love divides

Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways

If he ever hurts you
True love won’t desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways

Troubled times
Caught between
Confusion and pain, pain, pain
Distant eyes
Promises we make
Were in vain, in vain

If you must go, I wish you love
You’ll never walk alone
Take care, my love
Miss you, love

Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you
How we touched
And went our separate ways

If he ever hurts you
True love won’t desert you
You know I still love you
Though we touched
And went our separate ways

Someday love will find you
Break those chains that bind you
One night will remind you

If he ever hurts you
True love won’t desert you
You know I still love you

I still love you, girl
I really love you, girl

And if he ever hurts you
True love won’t desert you
No, no
